The Col Bas lakes are classified as a Sensitive Natural Area, a fragile site rich in biodiversity. Do not stray from the marked trail (biotope protection order no. 86-3106).
This is a rare phenomenon in Haute-Provence: lakes have been invaded by plants that have accumulated and partially filled them, creating a unique wetland environment. This prevents the complete decomposition of organic matter, giving the lake its blackish color and allowing peat to form in layers at a rate of 3 to 4 cm per century. Each layer preserves the remains of living things that have disappeared over the centuries and allows us to reconstruct the environments of different eras.

From Seyne-les-Alpes (9 km), take the D207 towards Montclar, then the D607 to Saint-Pons, where you follow the Col-Bas forest trail (open from May to October) to its end (with a designated parking lot).

Alternative: Access via chairlifts, Montclar Station. The Brèche chairlift requires an intermediate stop; you can return via the Lacs stop.
